General
What should I expect at my first visit?
At your first visit, after we check you in at the front desk, we will show you around the studio and explain you the most important rules. If it’s a social event, you can mingle with the others, watch scenes, play, and enjoy the vibes. If it’s an educational event, we will explain the modes and some housekeeping in the beginning of the event. Either way, it’s a very relaxed and low expectations environment.
Do I need to bring anything?
Generally, each event description outlines if there is any specific materials needed. Aside from that, you can bring what you need to be comfortable (as long as it’s not in conflict with the house rules). That can be a water bottle, your meds, note taking materials, a book, a stuffed animal, a blanket, a change of clothes, etc.
Is Studio Allegory a queer only space?
Studio Allegory is a space for the queer community and other marginalized and policed groups and “Friends”.
Friends are those who recognize and respect the need for spaces such as this, and who support those who are members of the queer community and other marginalized and policed groups.
Accessibility
Is Studio Allegory an accessible space?
Studio Allegory is on the ground floor and there are no steps anywhere in the space. There is a single washroom for all with a handle bar and a hand dryer. We have unscented soap, and we run an automatic industrial air purifier with HEPA filter. Studio Allegory has a kitchen corner with a kettle and a coffee maker, as well as a mini fridge and a microwave. We also have a quiet room equipped with fidget toys, colouring books, blankets, noise cancelling headphones, and stuffed animals. Upon request we can provide closed captions for our workshops running on a screen. We have masks for a small donation. More info here.
Do you have low-barrier payment options?

Do I have to sign up with my legal name, even if I don’t use it anymore?
No, you can sign up with the name that you have chosen. We will only ever refer to that name and you can change that name any time you please. Please note that the release of liability (“waiver”) must be signed with your actual signature.
Is there parking near Studio Allegory?
Yes. There is pay parking outside the studio and some 2 hour spots a block or so away. We can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to find a spot, though, so please plan ahead. There are also lots of public transport options available in the area.
What are you doing about Covid and other airborne illnesses?
We invested in a large enough air filtration system. We encourage masks at all times and require masks for certain events. Facilitators and space holders test regularly, are vaccinated, and test on the day of their event. We offer refunds for booked tickets in case of illness to make the decision to stay at home easier.
House Rules
Do you allow SOP?
The short answer is no. In order to keep our business license, city regulations require genitals to be covered at all times.
Do you allow photography in your classes and/or play parties?
Yes, but everyone in the photo must give prior consent to being photographed. That means everyone in the frame, not just the main focus. Consent to be photographed does not equal consent to have that image shared. Sharing doesn’t just mean posting online, it can also mean showing that photo to someone else. Prior consent must also be obtained before sharing the image. We do not allow videos or Meta glasses at the studio. If anyone requests for there to be no photography during a session we will communicate that to those who are taking part and no photography will be allowed for that session.
What’s the dress code?
Comfortable clothing (think the sort of thing you would wear to a yoga class) is ideal for most of our classes. Any exceptions will be expressly stated on the event page on our website.
Classes
Can I take the Intro to ropes classes in any order?
Yes. You can take our Intro classes in any order, although some people may find it easier to come to the classes consecutively. We run the Intro classes once a week on the following rotation:
1st Friday of the month: single and double column ties and some fun applications
2nd Friday of the month: safety, consent, and pre-scene negotiation
3rd Friday of the month: frictions, hitches, arm and leg binders
4th Friday of the month: the Takate Kote
5th Friday (if there is one): Wildcard (we announce the topic the week before)
Do you do online classes?
In partnership with Karada House, Studio Allegory offers some hybrid classes. We record the classes we teach in person and they are distributed via Karada House’s platform. The camera is aimed away from the participants in the class, so their image is not recorded, but voices may be audible on the recording.
Do I need to bring a partner?
Not for most classes. If you need to bring a partner, the event description will explicitly state that the class is intended to be taken with a partner (for example, certain suspension classes). In those cases, you can still come but active participation won’t be possible. Please note that if you come on your own, there’s no guarantee that there will be someone to pair up with for the event!
Organizational
Can I buy a ticket at the door?
Yes. You can buy tickets to classes in advance on our website, or at the door on the day of the class. If you choose the latter, please ensure that you leave enough time before the class to do so.
Do I need a membership?
No membership is needed for any events or participation. A membership or a punch pass can save you money, though, depending on how often you attend classes.
Do I have to sign a waiver?
Yes. Everyone who participates in social events and classes needs to sign a release of liability. Our insurance company requires us to have that. It also helps us to ensure that participants are of legal age and that they are aware that their participation is associated with certain risks that we can’t control.
Rent The Studio
Can I rent the space for public events?
Yes. Terms and conditions* apply. Please note that we have a handful of individuals who are not permitted at Studio Allegory. If you want to host a workshop intensive, check in with us if the person you want to bring in is allowed at the venue. Please also note that some of our house rules must be followed also for private events (e.g. keeping the noise level low).
